Tomorrow I have made a hair appointment because I don’t want to be one of those women who walk around with split ends, spit up on their shirt and do nothing but talk about their kids. YAWN. So, despite being in denial that my hairdresser and friend of 18 years has abandoned me for London (hello Kevin!), I’ve made an appointment for tomorrow afternoon with a lady that Julie recommended.
But I didn’t check the time with the Lepard and he has meetings, so I gave Uncle Ginger Queen a call and he has kindly agreed to fly solo for the first time with Tom.
Let’s hope he doesn’t wear this get-up…he might scare little Tommy.

Yesterday was a pretty uneventful day. It seemed as if Tom and I spent the whole day getting ready to do something but never actually getting around to it–still can’t think of what that something was!
Chris came home and we decided to cook two dinners–one for that night and one to have for the rest of the week–we agreed upon spaghetti and shepherd’s pie. Busily engrossed in food prep, we both suddenly realized that, for a moment, we had forgotten that we had Tom. He was sound asleep in the bedroom and we were working away until we heard a familiar squawk. I put him in his bouncer and pulled up a chair in the kitchen as Chris finished up. Tom spent a full 10-minutes fascinated by a bizarre mouse/bear hybrid thingy that dangles down from his bouncer. At first, he just watched it and then he started pounding away at it like he was Rocky going to town on Apollo Creed. I commented on how nice and simple a life it must be that you can busy yourself by watching a distorted cartoon bear for 10 minutes, to which Chris kindly pointed out that I had manged to occupy myself for the past 10 minutes watching a mini-human watching a scary plastic bear.
The uneventful day turned into a surreal night–neighbors having screaming matches on their front porch; Chris and Tom getting into a tussle that resulted in both of them needing a bath (say no more); and me caught in the middle trying to decide which event was more entertaining! I think I learned that you don’t mess with Trish and you certainly don’t mess with Tom.
Today, Trish, Sandy and I took Tom, Jack and Mickey for a walk. I was seriously deluded if I thought I could manage all three of them (Jack, Mickey and Tom) by myself. I think I’ll have to take one doggie at a time–but that will increase the amount of walking I’m doing which is a good thing.

Today, we met Chris and David for breakfast at Joe’s Coffee Shop in downtown Austin. Tom screamed the whole way down there, but we found a parking spot and gave him at least two cows worth of milk before heading to the café. He slept happily through our breakfast and our browsing through some stores on 2nd Street. In one store, Mercury, I found a book called “This Is London” by M. Sasek—the cover tells me it is a children’s classic and the drawings were fun so I decided to buy it for Tom. I realized that this is probably the first thing I’ve actually bought for him (apart from essentials like diapers and formula). Chris and I have been having too much fun trying all the outfits and toys we’ve received thanks to the generosity of all our family and friends. We haven’t had time (or the need) to buy him pressies ourselves.
One of our initial concerns when we found out about Tom was that our social life would disappear. I think we’ve spent the last two weeks overcompensating for that fear! So far, Tom has visited the following places/events: Target; neighborhood happy hour; the Dog and Duck pub; Blue Star Café; El Chile’s restaurant; Joe’s Coffee Shop; Room Service (vintage store where Chris and David work); and Whole Foods. I think that’s more places than I went to in the last three months! Tonight, we’re heading out to Threadgill’s to meet up with some work colleagues/friends, but we’re only staying for a few minutes as I’m rather proud of how I’ve been able to disconnect myself from the office—thank god for Krystal and the rest of the crew and their masterful ability to takeover so I don’t have to worry about a thing.
After all todays excitement, Tom and Chris just couldn’t keep up…

Yesterday was a full day for Tommy. In the afternoon (because we can’t seem to get out until then) we took a trip to see the Ginger Queen and David at Room Service. We all sat around the store, acting as if it were our own living room. The three of us then went to Whole Foods to get some groceries. After a small nap, we met up with Trish and Sandy at El Chile’s where Sally was finally able to have her favorite Chilango Orange Margarita. After dinner, we came back to Cloverleaf to enjoy some A/C and a couple of drinks with all of the Fairy God Parents (Trish, Sandy, Ginger Chris, and David).
Tommy has been sleeping quite well lately, maybe we have just become accustomed to his winges and cries during the night! At the Doctor’s on Friday, Tommy weighed in just under 10lbs and received a clean bill of health. He is starting to hold our gaze a little bit which makes looking after him a bit more interesting. Previously, it was a bit like changing and feeding an unresponsive (but breathing) lump. We like him! Sally is already fed up with reading children’s books to him, so now she has started reading aloud books that she wants to read. He seems to like the short stories of Jeffrey Archer. He has also inherited Sally’s love of Bruce Springsteen, sometimes the only thing that will get him to stop crying is Sally singing along to “Thunder Road.” She has yet to try any Tom Jones on him.
The photo (provided by Katie) comes from Tommy’s first tripto the Dog & Duck Pub last Sunday. It will certainly not be his last trip to the pub, we think he likes the stout beers the best.

Only a grandma can sit through all of this… and maybe me. Even Sally had to get up and make a cup of tea before it was over.

This evening we gave Tommy his first real bath. We were extremely common, didn’t even bother with getting out his real bath tub. Instead, we dunked him in the kitchen sink. You will see from the pictures that he didn’t enjoy it too much.

This little guy was tired after a long delivery. Sally is doing well, considering. Tommy ended up being 9.5lbs & 22″. I am sure we will have way to many pictures by the end of the weekend.
