Today, we met Chris and David for breakfast at Joe’s Coffee Shop in downtown Austin. Tom screamed the whole way down there, but we found a parking spot and gave him at least two cows worth of milk before heading to the café. He slept happily through our breakfast and our browsing through some stores on 2nd Street. In one store, Mercury, I found a book called “This Is London” by M. Sasek—the cover tells me it is a children’s classic and the drawings were fun so I decided to buy it for Tom. I realized that this is probably the first thing I’ve actually bought for him (apart from essentials like diapers and formula). Chris and I have been having too much fun trying all the outfits and toys we’ve received thanks to the generosity of all our family and friends. We haven’t had time (or the need) to buy him pressies ourselves.
One of our initial concerns when we found out about Tom was that our social life would disappear. I think we’ve spent the last two weeks overcompensating for that fear! So far, Tom has visited the following places/events: Target; neighborhood happy hour; the Dog and Duck pub; Blue Star Café; El Chile’s restaurant; Joe’s Coffee Shop; Room Service (vintage store where Chris and David work); and Whole Foods. I think that’s more places than I went to in the last three months! Tonight, we’re heading out to Threadgill’s to meet up with some work colleagues/friends, but we’re only staying for a few minutes as I’m rather proud of how I’ve been able to disconnect myself from the office—thank god for Krystal and the rest of the crew and their masterful ability to takeover so I don’t have to worry about a thing.
After all todays excitement, Tom and Chris just couldn’t keep up…

Yesterday was a full day for Tommy. In the afternoon (because we can’t seem to get out until then) we took a trip to see the Ginger Queen and David at Room Service. We all sat around the store, acting as if it were our own living room. The three of us then went to Whole Foods to get some groceries. After a small nap, we met up with Trish and Sandy at El Chile’s where Sally was finally able to have her favorite Chilango Orange Margarita. After dinner, we came back to Cloverleaf to enjoy some A/C and a couple of drinks with all of the Fairy God Parents (Trish, Sandy, Ginger Chris, and David).
Tommy has been sleeping quite well lately, maybe we have just become accustomed to his winges and cries during the night! At the Doctor’s on Friday, Tommy weighed in just under 10lbs and received a clean bill of health. He is starting to hold our gaze a little bit which makes looking after him a bit more interesting. Previously, it was a bit like changing and feeding an unresponsive (but breathing) lump. We like him! Sally is already fed up with reading children’s books to him, so now she has started reading aloud books that she wants to read. He seems to like the short stories of Jeffrey Archer. He has also inherited Sally’s love of Bruce Springsteen, sometimes the only thing that will get him to stop crying is Sally singing along to “Thunder Road.” She has yet to try any Tom Jones on him.
The photo (provided by Katie) comes from Tommy’s first tripto the Dog & Duck Pub last Sunday. It will certainly not be his last trip to the pub, we think he likes the stout beers the best.

Only a grandma can sit through all of this… and maybe me. Even Sally had to get up and make a cup of tea before it was over.

This evening we gave Tommy his first real bath. We were extremely common, didn’t even bother with getting out his real bath tub. Instead, we dunked him in the kitchen sink. You will see from the pictures that he didn’t enjoy it too much.
